About this blog

The story that I published Wednesday about former top Shin Bet informant Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a Hamas leader in the West Bank, prompted many responses. Fatah used the commotion to paint Hamas as “unpatriotic” while Hamas waited several hours before releasing the standard “this is all part of Zionist propaganda against the Palestinian people” response.

Arab television commentators tried to portray the story as an attempt by the Shin Bet to draw attention away from the “failure” in Dubai. In one interview I was asked by a news anchor on the BBC network in Arabic how I could not see the connection between the two events.

All in all, this public relations campaign by Mosab to promote his book was planned well before someone in Dubai thought to hold a press conference to identify 15 more suspects.

This is in essence the almost unimaginable story of Mosab, 32, who decided to go against everything that he had been taught by his father, family, religion and surroundings. This heavy, even heartbreaking story, is about a young Palestinian who turned his father in to the Shin Bet in order to save him from being assassinated. Mosab even used his mother by sending her to his father in hiding, allowing IDF troops to follow her to his father’s location.

Sheikh Hassan Yousef released a message on Wednesday saying the article was not true. I am saddened that he has been hurt by the personal dimension of this story.

I have always believed that if there is someone in Hamas that Israel would be able to talk with, it would be Sheikh Hassan Yousef. I met him in prison in 2004 while conducting interviews with my colleague Amos Harel for our book “The Seventh War” about the second intifada. The Sheikh is an exceptional man who does not support the use of violence despite the fact that he is part of Hamas. He used to tell his son Mosab that it is important to protect even the life of a cricket in a field. The Sheikh was very interested in Israeli society and at a certain point in our acquaintance even tried to pass along calming messages to the government of Ariel Sharon.

Unfortunately, Hamas in Damascus was not like the Sheikh. They attacked him politically more than once and at one point even threatened him not to participate in parliamentary elections but in the end he was elected as a Hamas parliamentary representative. His son Mosab accompanied him during this whole period, wearing his leather jacket, and sporting a hair cut not fashionable for the son of a senior Hamas official. But circumstances, developments and mainly the faith of Mosab led him to do what he did. Mosab’s decision to tell his story and not to hide anymore is based on his deep faith in the righteousness of his path, his desire to save human life and to send a message against violence and in favor of peace.

Last week, Sheikh Hassan Yousef was moved to the Ketziot prison in the Negev. Only this week did he learn that his son was a Shin Bet agent. I can only hope that he will forgive his son and adopt his son’s doctrine, even if it was a path not acceptable to him.

Senior Hamas official Sheikh Hassan Yousef has announced he has disowned his son Mosab following the revelation that he was a Shin Bet agent for many years and provided information which led to the arrests of high-ranking Palestinian officers.
Yousef, who is currently serving a sentence in an Israeli prison, published a letter on Monday in which he wrote the following:
“Based on our principles, our understanding of our religion and what is imposed upon us by our faith, and relying on a heresy against Allah committed by a man named Mosab, his questioning of the Koran, his treachery towards Muslims and his collaboration with the enemies of Allah and thus having caused damage to our people, I, Sheikh Hassan Yusuf Dawood Dar Khalil along with my family (wife, sons and daughters) completely renounce the man who was my eldest son, who is called Mosab, now living in America.”
Based on the Islamic faith, when an individual betrays the faith and collaborates with the enemy, he is to be sentenced to death. By publishing his letter and disowning his son, Yousef has in fact called for him to be punished by death and has allowed anyone to commit the act of his murder

I DREAM WITH A PASSION OF TURNING HATRED INTO LOVE
I find it difficult to understand the sum of a person's life. Some people would tell you it's made up from the ones you leave behind; some say from love; others say life has no meaning at all.

I find it difficult to understand the sum of a person’s life. Some people would tell you it’s made up from the ones you leave behind; some say from love; others say life has no meaning at all.

Me? Well I believe you measure your life by the people who measure their lives by yours.

The long journey to make your dreams come true is almost indescribable, yet extremely difficult; because no matter how hard you may strive to accomplish your dreams, there will always be an obstacle or obstacles to block your way. For there are many things a person is not willing to sacrifice. Am I right?

These obstacles distract you from striving further. And most people find this difficult, because it’s human nature to get distracted. Therefore, to make your dreams come true, you must find a way to remove the obstacle; so you may finally see the seldom seen path you could, one day walk down, the path that will make your dreams come true. If you can focus your thoughts on the journey alone, you will definitely succeed.
*

What are my dreams? This is something every generation asks.
A dream I have is to write an internationally best selling novel. I work on ideas for my hoped for novel every day. This is a task you must do,if you want your dreams to come true.

Being passionate is a key attribute. There are many other tasks I know I have to choose and complete, if this dream of mine will ever come true.

My story is not a story; but a blend of a tale and a true story. It’s about the sum of my life and it’s about every deed I do, did and plan on doing… to attempt to widen people’s consciousness from anger to happiness, from envy to acceptance and mostly, from hatred to love.

I want to write books that change people’s lives, change the way they think and feel… stories of transformation, renewal and especially hope. To complete my true tale, I must study people’s feelings and try to change others feelings of hatred… and fully change them for the better in some way. This is the meaning of life, this is the purpose of existence. This is my dream, something I simply MUST accomplish.

One sunny day I’ll change a person so much (for the better) that in a state of “blissful enlightenment I’ll know the real meaning of life: what true love is. Then I’ll know that when my time on earth comes to an end, my eyes will be closed, but my heart (new) will be open.”

I came across these most uplifting words by a young New Zealand student . . . and they fitted perfectly into the book I'm working on and the central themes of the manuscript Though you may perhaps see these writings through the eyes of words inspired by the "idealism of youth", far removed from the "realpolitik" of todays world, I think they have real merit and are beautifully written with much feeling and passion. So here is an extract from Phwaye's powerful and inspiring article, that I'm sharing (with Phway's permission). Enjoy...

The world is full of horror, because we do nothing to end it writes PHWAY AYE…

For generations, it has been the aching dream of humanity. Marked on the face of every man and every woman, it has been a search so powerful, it defined humanity’s very existence. Driven by our moral and spiritual obligations, it has been a search towards which millions have turned their hearts and souls. This has been our search for world peace.

From the beginning, the human race has always questioned the possibility of a peaceful world, rid of war, violence and poverty. We dreamed of a world, so composed, it embraced its diversities, settled on its differences and sought, day in and day out, to help all those in need.

Will this dream of a global peace ever be achievable? Will a time ever come when peace was not just a dream, but a way of life? Or is the human race condemned by nature to live in this constant throbbing search for something we were never, essentially meant to find?

A better world will not be achieved unless we take it in OUR hands to do something about it. We can’t expect a world of peace to come about, if we are not willing to put in the effort.

We can’t deny the mistakes of the past. Neither can we fix them. But what we can do is try to understand. Like each and every one of us, the world had to make its own mistakes. But mistakes are made to be learned from, and this is our time to learn. A better world will not be achieved, unless we take it into our hands to do something about it. We can’t expect a world of peace to come about, if we are not willing to put in the effort.

The future of humanity sits on our shoulders. Do we want our children and grandchildren to look back on us and ask why we were so stupid? Why we didn’t realise the enormity of our mistakes? Why we sat back and watched it all pass by? The world is full of horrors; not because of those who do harm, but because of those who do nothing about it.

We cannot keep ignoring these cries. Our job isn’t to step back and keep applying new bandage after bandage to old wounds. Our job is to strip the world of its old bandages and find a way to heal those wounds.

We cannot stop the war in Iraq, feed all the children in Africa, or put an end to poverty. We cannot bring about peace and change to the world in one go. But we can work to rebuild it little by little in the small things we do in our lives. Change will only come when each of us takes responsibility for finding peace within ourselves and with the people around us.

World peace will not happen overnight. It will not happen in our lifetime, or in 20. But what we do know is that it must. In fact it is inevitable. It is only our job to CHOOSE so.

Submitter's Note:

I came across these great words by a young New Zealand student by the name of Sean O'Connor. and they fitted perfectly into the book I'm working on and the central themes of the manuscript So here is an extract from his inspiring words (and slightly adapted by me). in Sean's chapter.
I find it difficult to understand the sum of a person's life. Some people would tell you it's made up from the ones you leave behind; some say from love; others say life has no meaning at all.

Me? Well I believe you measure your life by the people who measure their lives by yours.

I DREAM WITH A PASSION OF TURNING HATRED INTO LOVE

Mosab Hassan Yousef, a 32-year-old convert to Christianity, now lives in California

The son of one of Hamas’s founding members was a spy in the service of Israel for more than a decade, helping to prevent dozens of Islamist suicide bombers from finding their targets, it emerged yesterday.
Codenamed the “Green Prince” by Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service, Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of the Hamas co-founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, supplied key intelligence almost daily from 1996. He tracked down suicide bombers and their handlers from his father’s organisation, the Haaretz newspaper said.
Information supplied by him led to the arrests of some of the most- wanted men by Israeli forces, including Marwan Barghouti, a Fatah leader tipped as a potential president, who was convicted of masterminding terrorist attacks, along with one of Hamas’s top bombmakers, Abdullah Barghouti, who is no relation of the jailed Fatah chief.
Mr Yousef, 32, a convert to Christianity who now lives in California, has revealed the intrigues of his years as a spy in a new book called Son of Hamas, much to the concern of Shin Bet, whose operations will be revealed in detail. While the revelations may give a boost to Israel’s intelligence service, whose external counterpart, Mossad, is still grappling with the diplomatic fallout of last month’s Hamas assassination in Dubai, there will be concern that the account may give too many insights into the murky world of espionage.

Mr Yousef’s work will be far more damaging to Hamas, whose brutality he denounced. Dubai police have suggested that Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, the top Hamas militant found dead in a hotel room in the emirate on January 20, may have been betrayed by an insider from the Islamist movement.
Mr Yousef had harsh words for the movement that his father helped to form, and which now rules the Gaza Strip after a bloody takeover in the summer of 2007. “Hamas cannot make peace with the Israelis,” he said. “That is against what their God tells them. It is impossible to make peace with infidels, only a ceasefire, and no one knows that better than I. The Hamas leadership is responsible for the killing of Palestinians, not Israelis.”
Hamas issued a muted reaction to the report, with Mahmoud al-Ramahi, a West Bank official, saying that it was designed to “sow confusion in the minds of Palestinians” and make them believe the movement was riddled with high-level moles. Mr Yousef’s former Israeli handler, identified only as Captain Loai, praised the resolve of his agent, whose codename derived from the colour of Islam and Hamas’s banner and from his exalted position within an organisation that regularly kills those suspected of collaborating with the Jewish state.
“So many people owe him their life and don’t even know it,” he said. “The amazing thing is that none of his actions were done for money. He did things he believed in. He wanted to save lives. His grasp of intelligence matters was just as good as ours — the ideas, the insights. One insight of his was worth 1,000 hours of thought by top experts.”
Mr Yousef, whose father is still in an Israeli jail cell, from where he was elected as an MP in 2006, went as far as tracking down would-be kamikazes himself in the streets of the West Bank during the second intifada (uprising), which erupted a decade ago and left thousands of Palestinians and Israelis dead. On one occasion he followed a bomber from Manara Square in the centre of Ramallah, just north of Jerusalem.
“We didn’t know his name or what he looked like — only that he was in his 20s and would be wearing a red shirt,” said the former handler. “We sent the Green Prince to the square and with his acute sense, he located the target within minutes. He saw who picked him up, followed the car and made it possible for us to arrest the suicide bomber and the man who was supposed to give him the belt. So another attack was thwarted, though no one knows about it. No one opens champagne bottles or bursts into song and dance. This was an almost daily thing for the Prince. He displayed courage, had sharp antennae and an ability to cope with danger.”
Mr Yousef, who converted from Islam to Christianity a decade ago — in itself a dangerous act — was arrested by the Israelis in 1996. Within a year he had been recruited by Shin Bet, was released, and began working as an informant.
Speaking by telephone from California, Mr Yousef told Haaretz he worried that the Israeli Government might release some of the prisoners he helped to put behind bars in exchange for Gilad Schalit, a young Israeli soldier abducted by Hamas from the Gaza border more than three years ago.
“I wish I were in Gaza now,” he said. “I would put on an army uniform and join Israel’s special forces in order to liberate Gilad Schalit. If I were there, I could help. We wasted so many years with investigations and arrests to capture the very terrorists that they now want to release in return for Schalit. That must not be done.”

The dangerous game
• In 1954 Egypt cracked an Israeli spy cell of nine Egyptian Jews who had firebombed sites frequented by Westerners. The agents hoped Egyptian extremists would be blamed, embarrassing Cairo into halting plans to nationalise Suez
• Isser Harel headed Mossad in the 1950s when it tracked down fugitive ex-Nazi leaders including Adolf Eichmann, right. In Operation Eichmann, a team of eleven tracked their quarry for two years before kidnapping him. The drugged Eichmann was taken to Israel on the same aircraft that was carrying the Israeli Foreign Minister
• Eli Cohen, an Egyptian-born Jew, became an Israeli spy in the 1960s and was sent to Syria in the guise of a wealthy Arab. He infiltrated the Syrian defence establishment and toured military installations in the Golan Heights. In 1965 he was caught and executed but his work was said to have helped Israel to victory in the Six Day War of 1967
• In 1985 Jonathan Pollard, an analyst for the US Navy, was jailed for life for passing intelligence to an Israeli agency that collected technical information. He was said to have stolen more than a million classified documents

New book tells story of Hamas founder’s son who became a Christian — and spied for Israel
Stand for Israel 27 February 2010
Israel is buzzing with the news that one of the most valuable Palestinian informants to Israel’s security service is none other than the son of one of the founders of Hamas.
In an interview published in full in Friday’s Ha’aretz magazine, Mosab Hassan Yousef discussed the decade he spent passing information about Hamas to Israel, exposed of a number of terrorist cells, and prevented dozens of suicide bombings and assassination attempts on Israeli figures.
According to Ha’aretz, Yousef–the oldest son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, one of Hamas’ founders and its top official in the West Bank– was considered the most reliable of the security services’ sources on Hamas,:

… earning himself the nickname “the Green Prince” – using the color of the Islamist group’s flag, and “prince” because of his pedigree …
During the second intifada, intelligence Yousef supplied led to the arrests of a number of high-ranking Palestinian figures responsible for planning deadly suicide bombings. These included Ibrahim Hamid (a Hamas military commander in the West Bank, Marwan Barghouti (founder of the Fatah-linked Tanzim militia) and Abdullah Barghouti (a Hamas bomb-maker with no close relation to the Fatah figure). Yousef was also responsible for thwarting Israel’s plan to assassinate his father.
Perhaps even more dangerous for Yousef than spying for Israel, however, is the fact that Yousef converted to Christianity 10 years ago. Yousef, now 32, fled the West Bank in 2007 and now lives in California. In 2008, he went public with his conversion — also in an interview with Ha’aretz.
After the article about his faith ran, the al-Qaida-affiliated Global Islamic Media Front released a statement calling for his death. Quoting Mohamed, the statement said, “Whoever alters his religion, kill him.” [emphasis theirs]
It is only now–on the eve of publication of Son of Hamas, his new book, which is being released by Tyndale next month–that Yousef is going public about his work with Israel. The book a childhood spent being groomed for the Hamas leadership, about his conversion and faith (his publisher pithily says he “embraced instead the teachings of another famous Middle East leader”), his agonizing separation from family and homeland, his dangerous decision to make his newfound faith public, and his belief that the Christian mandate to “love your enemies” is the only way to peace in the Middle East.
While his own father’s comrades may call him an infidel or worse, Israelis marvel at his bravery:
“So many people owe him their life and don’t even know it. People who did a lot less were awarded the Israel Security Prize. He certainly deserves it,” Ha’aretz quotes his handler, who his book calls “Captain Loai”:
Loai makes no secret of his admiration for his former source. “The amazing thing is that none of his actions were done for money,” he says. “He did things he believed in. He wanted to save lives. His grasp of intelligence matters was just as good as ours – the ideas, the insights. One insight of his was worth 1,000 hours of thought by top experts.”
Speaking by phone from California, Yousef told Ha’aretz that he wishes he were in Gaza now so that he could help the IDF liberate kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. But Yousef argued against the sort of prisoner swaps that have been discussed: “We wasted so many years with investigations and arrests to capture the very terrorists that they now want to release in return for Shalit. That must not be done.”
Mosab told the newspaper that he acted in accordance with his beliefs, which compelled him to hate Hamas.

AN “INTERVIEW” (OR MEDITATION) WITH JESUS ON THE STATE OF THE WORLD TODAY

“CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD” through Jesus

Key words (Tags): Jesus, Jesus Christ, teachings, “inspiration”, faith

Submitter’s Note:

The ‘reporter’ “did this interview with Jesus” yesterday and he doesn’t know whether he’s really crazy sharing this personal “interview” publically on the net (perhaps I’ll be locked away by funny little men in white coats), but am just doing it… “impulsively” (as always).

“Lucky” 13th Feb 2010
*
Jesus, why is the world such a mess and how can the world be made a better place?

It always has been, but these are particularly uncertain days in history. Still the current state of the world saddens me greatly.. especially the great divisions between nations. If people could just follow my teachings of 2000 years ago the world would be transformed. These teachings are practical solutions to the problems of the world … and they are as valid in my time on earth… today and always.

What can be done to bring unity between people, particularly between east and west, as there are so many religions (apparently conflicting), cultures and religious traditions?

A spirit of love is the well-spring of hope and brings people together… and this brings peace. Put God, the Father first, love your neighbour as yourself… and everything else, GOOD flows from that.

Is there one God and are YOU God, Jesus? There are many manifestations of God and I am but one manifestation. I have always had a very special relationship with my Father; but so can YOU, if you so choose.
I call myself “Son of Man”, in fact, more than “Son of God”, but everyone is a “child of God, the Father”. I just have and always will have a very special, intimate relationship with God, my Father.
There will be other messengers bringing God’s message after me, as our Father works through special people on earth (those who have a special sense of ‘mission and destiny’). Then they are my hands and voice, a channel for my spirit to flow through.
*
What about Allah, the God of Islam?

As I said, there is only ONE Infinite Spirit, One God. It’s just another term for the Creator of the Universe, which stems from different cultures, another tradition.

So are you saying all rivers lead to the ocean?

No, not all oceans are the same. Because each person’s path is different and you’ll have different experiences of God along your individual journey, depending on what you believe. And everyone’s experience of Heaven, the Kingdom of God will then be different… because of their unique path of life.

So are you the only way, the only path to God?

I am quite horrified by the way the church has applied much of what I taught over the past 2000 years and used my words selectively. I used (and use) parables to get my message across very simply, but so much of what I said is taken literally.
I said no-one comes to the Father, except through ME. Other religions don’t offer a personal relationship with God, the Ultimate Source, and don’t utilise the concept of God as “a Father figure”. So only those who follow me will have a “Christ-consciousness” (and this is different to an “Allah consciousness” of the same ONE God).

I hope, I trust that my spirit comes alive through my words… giving hope eternally…and the only way I could do that was to die as I did!

God bless you all.”

Jesus

13th Feb in the year 2010

“If I can throw a single ray of light across the darkened pathway of another;
if I can aid some soul to clearer sight of life and duty, and thus bless my brother;
if I can wipe from any human cheek a tear,
I shall not have lived my life in vain while here.
If I can guide some erring one to truth, inspire within his heart a sense of duty;
if I can plant within my soul of rosy youth a sense of right, a love of truth and beauty;
if I can teach one man that God and heaven are near,
I shall not then have lived in vain while here.
If from my mind I banish doubt and fear, and keep my life attuned to love and kindness;
if I can scatter light and hope and cheer, and help remove the curse of mental blindness;
if I can make more joy, more hope, less pain,
I shall not have lived and loved in vain.
If by life’s roadside I can plant a tree, beneath whose shade some wearied head may rest,
though I may never share its beauty, I shall yet be truly blest –
though no one knows my name, nor drops a flower upon my grave,
I shall not have lived in vain while here.”
– Anonymous
Today, don’t just try to make a living… try to make a difference

“If a man is called to be a street-sweeper,
he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted,
or Beethoven composed music,
or Shakespeare wrote poetry.
He should sweep streets so well,
that all the hosts of heaven will pause to say,
here lived a great street sweeper
SHARING A FEW THOUGHTS (THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A NEW “WORK”)
SEE A NEW “WORK” TAKE SHAPE AND FORM

These are some notes that I’ve made recently (from my “red book”), which is forming the basis, the frame-work, the building-blocks for a new manuscript I’m writing. So will share with you and post extracts (hopefully regularly) on my WordPress blog (craiglock.wordpress.com) as I write it. Hopefully I’ll continue getting my “daily dose of inspiration”.
“We learn far more from our tears than from our laughter.”
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that really matter.”
- Dr Martin Luther King, Jnr
“If I must choose between righteousness and peace, I choose righteousness.”
- Franklin Roosevelt
“We can all be great; because we can all serve.”
- Mother Teresa
“Keep true to the dreams of your youth.”
- Friedrich Schiller, German writer and philosopher
“Try not to become a man (person) of success, but one of value.”
- Albert Einstein
“Those who stand up for justice will always be on the right side of history.”
Dr Martin Luther King, Jnr
“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
- Mahatma Gandhi (and Lance Armstrong)
“We are committed to the positive values found in sport:
Performance and passion, team-work and fair-play.”
The strength of spirit in the human heart. The love of God made manifest.
God’s greatest gift to us is to find our own truths.
Everyone has the capacity, the potential to manifest God’s ultimate nature.
My Writing
I write about the ‘essence of humanity’. I want to impel some kind of action in readers, like breaking down barriers in some small way. Religion divides; but truth unites (unity in truth). The way we live is more important than what we believe. We are all connected by the common bond of our shared humanity.
I try to show the extra-ordinary in’ordinary’ (what’s that?) lives, as revealed by the generous spirits and the exceptional strength and courage of so many ordinary people in their daily struggles along the sometimes very hard; yet of so satisfying journey that is called life.

“I was like floating on a cloud of infinite possibilities.”
(that’s a simile, btw!)

MY NEW BOOK
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that really matter.”
- Dr Martin Luther King, Jnr
Dedication:
“I love you in the very special way that I’ve written about in these pages.”
“To all of us who believe love rules,
stand up and let it shine.”
A TRUE story of renewal and transformation: a transformation of heart. Eternal truths.
Hope for a new beginning – one not divided by the past but with hope for the future.
In a phrase, A NEW HEART.
Khatib is the Arab word (name) for writer
Themes of:
* build bridges of reconciliation (“threads of hope”)
Truth overcomes power
* forgiveness: Forgiveness for the past, strength for today and hope for the future.
* the strength of spirit in the human heart
“The task ahead of you can always be overcome by the power within you…and the often seemingly difficult or even “impassible”) path ahead of you is never as steep with the great spirit that lies within you.”
“We have it within; but we get it all from without. There is a well-spring of strength, wisdom, courage and great imagination within each one of us;
but once we draw on this truth, it gets watered from without, by a Higher Source – the Ultimate Source of Life and Love, which is God, the very Ground of our Being.”
“Our Greatest Good is perhaps not to share our material possessions, our money and ‘riches’ with others, but through faith in other people, to so lay the foundation to reveal the rich treasure that lies within themselves.”
- craig
* the redemptive power of love
* Hope is irresistable. Plant seeds of hope: From seeds of hope to endles possibilities, far and grand horizons.”
“Together, one mind, one soul at a time, let’s see how many hearts can be transformed from hatred into love… with God’s help
(as only God can do that, but each one of us can be a channel for God’s love).
*
Let your spirit shine through these words.
Embrace the Light (Infinite ) and shine Your bright light on humanity
“Many small (yet significant) steps by many ‘little people with big hearts’ * will eventually reach their destination, their destiny.
“In the midst of darkness, light exists.”
- Mahatma Gandhi
However, it is a darkness that we will illuminate with our hearts. *
“Let us reach for the world that ought to be, that spark of the divine that still stirs within each of our goals.”
Craig believes that in spite of world peace being an unachievable, impossible dream, through his writings and ‘little actions in life’ he’ll just tirelelessly keep “‘beavering away’ to try to make some small difference towards a better and more peaceful world. Crazy??
